AU Swimming and Diving Competes at Navy Invitational

WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the Navy Invitational Saturday, both going 0-3. The men's and women's teams were defeated by Bucknell (236-57, 223-71), Lafayette (163-126, 201-93), and Navy (169-98, 221-70) respectively.
The men's team' top finisher from Saturday was senior Dan Nagelberg who took second place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:56.79. Nagelberg also swam the 400 free in 4:20.55 to place fourth. The men's 200 free relay team of Matt Pelletier, Brian Galm, Eric Sveum and Joe Coronato also had a second-place showing, swimming the event in a combined 1:38.90.
The women's team produced two individual victories in the form of senior Meghan Thiel and freshman Dorothy Issacs. Thiel won the third event of the day, the 800 free, in a time of 9:01.64, putting her nearly eight full seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Issacs won the 100 breast with a 1:15.89 in a more dramatic fashion, edging out two competitors by less than a second. Thiel also captured second-place in the 400 free, finishing just over one second behind the events winner in a time of 4:21.07.
Both teams will return to action next weekend at the George Mason Invitational. The three-day meet will take place in Fairfax, Va. starting Friday, Nov. 16, and conclude Sunday, Nov. 18.
