AU Swimming and Diving Teams Compete at Lafayette in PL Quad Meet

WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a quad meet at Lafayette on Saturday against Patriot League foes Bucknell, Lafayette and Navy. Mary-Margaret Lopez posted a win in the 200 butterfly for the Eagles and also placed second in the 100 fly.

Both Eagle teams went 0-3 on the day despite receiving several strong individual performances. The women's team was defeated by Bucknell, 214-82, Lafayette, 151-145, and Navy, 191-100. The men's team lost to Bucknell, 234-45, Lafayette, 219-54, and Navy, 190-67.

The women's team was led by Lopez, Dorothy Isaacs, Eleanor Clay and Alexandra Wessel who each recorded top-three finishes. Lopez earned the Eagles lone individual victory of the day in the 200 fly. She finished the race in a time of 2:08.63, nearly three seconds better than the event's second-place finisher. Lopez also placed second in the 100 fly recording a time of 58.00.

Isaacs swam to three top-three finishes including a second-place performance in the 100 breaststroke. The sophomore finished in a time of 1:05.96 just behind the event's winner who finished in 1:04.18. Isaacs also placed third in the 50 free in 24.12 and third in the 500 free in 5:13.76.

Clay and Wessel also each earned a third-place finish at the meet. Clay placed third in the 200 breast in 2:25.64 while Wessel placed third in the 200 free in 1:56.07.

The men's team was led by a solid performance from junior Matt Pelletier. Pelletier placed third in the 100 back in 53.04 and third in the 100 fly in 53.27.

The AU swimming and diving teams will be in action again next week as they compete in the George Mason Invitational, Nov. 21-23.
