Jan. 26, 2008
WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a quad meet Saturday afternoon at the Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason University. Both teams had strong individual performances but neither could pull out a team victory.
Army, GMU and Old Dominion joined AU at the meet. The women's team lost by scores of 211-82, 213-84 and 164-133, respectively, while the men's team lost by scores of 200-91, 235-59 and 232-63, respectively.
The women's team was led by senior Meghan Thiel who scored the only two victories of the day for AU. The reigning Patriot League and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association Swimmer of the Week won both the 500 and 1650 free. Thiel's 1650 free time of 17:24.41 is the seventh-fastest time in school history and the fifth-fastest time in conference history.
Thiel also competed in the 200 free, placing fifth.
Dorothy Isaacs also swam well for the women's team, taking second in the 100 free and fourth in the 100 breast. Isaacs finished the 100 breast in 1:08.07, putting her ninth on AU's all-time list.
On the men's side, Joe Coronato swam for three third-place finishes. Coronato competed in the 50, 100 and 200 free and just missed placing on AU's all-time list in both the 50 and 100.
The AU men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in action again next Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Navy Invitational.
