Callander Posts Fast Freestyle Mark at USS Nationals

Scott Callander swims at a recent meet

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Scott Callander went 20.85 seconds in the men's 50-yard freestyle on Thursday at the U.S. Swimming Winter Nationals to open a busy weekend for the American University Swimming & Diving teams.

Callander, an Eagle junior, posted a mark in a time trial that was well better than his previous 20.98 and continued a strong start to his season. It moved him into fifth all-time at AU and was the fastest in the event by an Eagle since 2009.

He will continue his participation at the USS meet, hosted by Ohio State, on Friday and Saturday by swimming the 100 and 200 butterfly.

A number of AU swimmers and divers will head to Long Island this weekend for the ECAC Winter Championships. American will participate in the three-day meet that begins Friday with a larger number of student-athletes having qualified for the meet than in recent years.

The Eagles have had a strong fall semester thus far, with a young AU women's team having already posted 24 new marks to the school's all-time top-16 list in nearly every event.
