WASHINGTON - Sophomore Vela McBride (volleyball) and sophomore Conner Allshouse (wrestling) have been selected as the Scholar-Athletes of the Month for December, the SASP staff announced on Thursday.

The monthly honor recognizes one male and one female student-athlete who is committed to academic success, has shown a dedication to academic improvement and growth, and/or is making a positive impact on the student-athlete community through the Life Skills program.

Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month
Vela McBride, Sophomore
Volleyball
B.S., Health Promotion

“It’s truly amazing to see how much Vela has grown as a person, as a student, and as a volleyball player since she first arrived on campus her freshman year.  Her determination and drive for academic and personal success have allowed her to rise to any challenge that has come her way.  This semester, Vela faced a challenging athletic schedule and still received her highest semester GPA to date.  I am so incredibly proud of the progress she has made and can’t wait to see what’s next for her!” – Erin Saunders, Academic Support Counselor

Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month
Conner Allshouse, sophomore
Wrestling
B.S., Business Administration

“Conner has truly earned the honor of 'Scholar-Athlete of the Month' for December because of the work he put in all semester long. It is clear that Conner learned much from his first year at AU.  I am proud of the adjustments he made to his attitude and work ethic in the classroom, and he earned his highest GPA to date during the fall semester as a result. He has also pushed through his share of adversity on and off the mat, which makes his academic accomplishments this semester all the more impressive. Conner’s focus and drive leaves me excited to see all he will accomplish in the future!” -Spencer Bonahoom, Academic and Life Skills Counselor
