Screamin' Eagles Pep Band

Frequently Asked Questions

Pep Band Tuba

Q: Can I take Pep Band for academic credit?
A: Indeed, you can! When registering, sign up for "Pep Band" section of PERF-145. The course is one-credit, and can be taken multiple times (and is a great way to increase your credit hours with little homework other than games and practices, which are fun!).

Q: Are there auditions?
A: Nope, as long as you can competently play your instrument (and we're sure you can), you can sign up and be a Screamin' Eagle.

Q: What instruments do you accept?
A: Quite frankly, anything. If it makes a noise, we'll find music in the right key and have you in the stands in no time! That said, we have voicing for the following instruments:
Piccolo
Flute
Clarinet
Alto, Soprano, Tenor,
& Baritone Saxophone
Mellophone
Trumpet
Trombone
Baritone
Sousaphone
Drum Set

Q: If I don't have my own instrument, can I still participate?
A: Contact us, and we'll talk. In the past, we've been able to work something out for most students. American University owns several sousaphones, a drum set, and a baritone saxophone, which are all available to members of the Screamin' Eagles.

Q: Do I have to be a Music Major to be a Screamin' Eagle?
A: Absolutely not! Though we appreciate and love the music majors who do join us, we have members from all schools and majors. Our only requirement is that you enjoy a good basketball game, like playing fun music, and don't mind throwing out a cheer for our Eagles!

Q: I'm always busy. What is the time commitment for the Band, and who do you play for?
A: During the fall semester, the Screamin' Eagles Pep Band meets once a week on Tuesday evenings for practice and to prepare for the coming seasons. There are fewer rehearsals during the spring, largely because of the basketball schedule. The Screamin' Eagles play for volleyball games in the fall and men's basketball games in the winter and spring, with occasional spirit events and women's basketball games sprinkled throughout. We ask you do your best with attendance, though we do understand that students do have other obligations at times.

Pep Band Group

Q: Does the Screamin' Eagles Pep Band travel to away games?
A: Yes! At the end of the men's basketball 2007 season, we traveled to Worcester, Mass., to play in the Patriot League Semifinals at Holy Cross. Sadly, we lost by a hair. In 2008, the Screamin' Eagles flew by private jet to Birmingham, Ala., to play and cheer for the AU Eagles during the team's first-ever NCAA Div. I Tournament appearance in school history, versus Tennessee. All traveling by the Screamin' Eagles is subsidized through several campus organizations, and is at no cost to the student.

Q: Can I be in multiple music groups at AU?
A: Of course - you can participate in every ensemble if you so choose (though we'd like to think you'd choose us over everyone else!).

Q: Just who are you people?
A: Funny you should ask. The Screamin' Eagles hail from all walks of life, all majors and departments at AU. We have alumni who come back to play with us, members in the Greek system, folks who show up when they can between classes, and people that live and breathe the band. We're an eclectic bunch, but a great group of folks - and we'd love to have you join our ranks.

Q: Is it true that the Screamin' Eagles are partly responsible for Don't Stop Believin' becoming the theme song of the 2008 miracle season, which took AU to the NCAA Div. I Tournament for the first time?
A: Sure is! Thanks to the foresight of our director in purchasing music, an amazing Student Government administration, and the back-room lobbying efforts of several dedicated Journey-loving Screamin' Eagles, Don't Stop Believin' became a part of history in the 2008 men's basketball season. And we'll surely be resurrecting it for our 2009 run at the NCAA title!

Q: You guys sound like a good time - how can I get information about joining?
A: Fill out the "Interest Form" at the top of the page.
