Men’s Soccer Set for Patriot League Championship at Navy Saturday Night

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer is set to travel to Annapolis, Md. on Saturday, Nov. 12 for the Patriot League Tournament Championship game against the Navy Midshipmen at 7 p.m. The Eagles are coming off a 3-1 double overtime upset of No. 1 Army on Tuesday. Saturday's game marks American's third-straight Patriot League Championship appearance.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • American leads the all-time series 15-12-9.
  • Navy won the regular season meeting in Annapolis, 1-0, on Nov. 2 in the regular season finale for both teams.
  • The two squads have met twice in the Patriot League Tournament. Both meetings took place during the tournament semifinals, most recently last season at Reeves. American won that meeting 4-2 to advance to the Patriot League Tournament Championship game.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • American enters Saturday's game with an 8-6-5 overall record and a 3-4-2 mark in Patriot League play.
  • The Eagles entered the tournament as the sixth seed. They then went on to beat No. 3 Colgate, 3-1, in the quarterfinal and upset No. 1 Army, 3-1, in double overtime in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
  • In Tuesday's semifinal game, freshman Troy Elgersma put American up 1-0 in the first half before the Black Knight's tied-up the game in the 67th minute. Neither team could find the golden goal in regulation as the game headed to overtime. Senior Mattias Cooper and sophomore Leo Palomo found the back of the net for American in the second overtime period to secure the 3-1 upset.
  • Junior Cooper Nunn, junior Evan Schweickert, Elgersma, Cooper, and Palomo have all found the back of the net for American in the postseason. Elgersma's two goals leads the team.
  • Schweickert and junior Robbie Matei lead the team overall in goals with four each. Cooper and Elgersma pace the Eagles in assists with four.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts has started all of the Eagles tournament games in goal, recording five saves and picking up both wins. He has a team-leading 14 saves this season.
  • American had five athletes selected to the Patriot League Postseason All-League teams. Junior Robbie Matei, junior Evan Schweickert and junior Cooper Nunn were named Second Team honorees while sophomore Zemi Rodriguez and junior Mike Bleeker were named to the Third Team.
  • Schweickert was named to the College Soccer News Men's National Team of the Week earlier this week for his goal and assist in the Eagles' win over Colgate on Saturday to advance to the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals.
  • American is in search of their fourth league title and their second in the last three seasons after winning the championship in the spring of 2021, 2-1 over Lafayette.
 WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NAVY
  • Navy enters Saturday's game with a 6-4-9 overall record and a 3-1-5 mark in Patriot League action.
  • The Midshipmen entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed. They defeated No. 5 Lafayette, 1-0, in the quarterfinals and No. 2 Boston University on penalty kicks, 9-8, in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
  • The Midshipmen are in search of their second Patriot League Championship in program history.
  • Junior David Jackson was named the 2022 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year and along with Jackson, three other Midshipmen received postseason all-league honors. Jackson was joined on All-Patriot League First Team by senior JD Wagner while junior Baba Kallie was named to the Second Team and sophomore Noah Ward received Third team honors.
  • Jackson leads the Midshipmen in goals with six while Ward leads the team in assists with four.
  • Sophomore Pierce Holbrook has been solid in goal for the Midshipmen this season, allowing just seven goals and recording 30 saves and three shutouts through eight games.
 PARKING AND ATTENDANCE
  • Admission to Saturday's game is free. Fans 18 and over need a government-issued photo ID.
  • Fans may park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for a fee and take a shuttle that will run every 10 minutes starting one hour before the game and will continue running until one hour after the game is completed. Enter the Stadium's Gate 5 off Taylor Ave. to park. Pedestrians may also walk through the Naval Academy's Gate 1 or Gate 8. Dogs are not permitted inside the Glenn Warner Soccer Complex.
