Starting in 1950, "Ginny" played several different roles at American University. After serving in the Navy and teaching at D.C. Public Schools for four years, Hawke was hired as an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and the Chair of the Department of Physical Education for Women.
In her almost three decades at AU, Hawke coached field hockey, volleyball, tennis and women's basketball.
She went on to help found the Metropolitcan Intercollegiate Sports Association for Women and was a lifelong member of the United States Field Hockey Association and helped increase the participation of women in intercollegiate athletics.
