|Position:||Associate Athletics Director for Communications|
Doug Dull has been hired in the American University athletics department as the Associate Athletics Director for Communications, Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Billy Walker announced Thursday.
Dull has served as the director of athletics communications at five institutions, most recently from 2003 to 2012 as the associate A.D. for media relations at the University of Maryland.
Since the summer of 2012, he has been the president and founder of DGD Communications, LLC, an independent public relations consultancy specializing in athletics and special events.
“I’m tremendously excited to announce that Doug has joined the American Eagles family as our associate athletics director for communications,” said Walker. “His vast experience and wealth of knowledge gained at several other institutions were especially striking during the interview process. We feel fortunate to welcome Doug to our team and I look forward to benefiting from his many contributions as a member of our senior staff.”
“I’m very excited to join the team at American,” said Dull, who has been in collegiate public relations for 24 years. “When I learned of this opportunity, I was immediately intrigued. But after some discussions and meetings with the staff, I felt this would be a great fit for me professionally.”
Dull also directed media relations for athletics at Kansas State (2000-2003), UC Davis (1991-2000) and Chico State (1989-1991). He was a sports writer and sports editor at the Hagerstown Herald-Mail from 1982 to 1989.
His experience as a primary contact covers nearly all sports and events at all levels. In addition to serving as media coordinator for various NCAA Championship events, Dull worked on the media services staff for two U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials (2000 & 2004).
He is a past president of the College Sports Information Directors of America (2006-07) and has been a member of that organization since 1990. Dull also serves on the national executive committee for the Entertainment and Sports Section of the Public Relations Society of America.
He is a member of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the Football Writers Association of America and the Track & Field Writers Association of America.
A 1981 graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in individual studies-athletics administration, Dull lives in Rockville, Md., with his wife, Dr. Patricia Bricmont.
