DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The American University Dance Team finished fourth in the Division I Jazz competition recently at the NCA / NDA Collegiate Nationals.
The Eagles Dance Team was scored 9.384 points in the finals to take fourth out of 12 schools in the competition. AU advanced to the finals after scoring 9.291 in the preliminary round.
"I'm so proud of the work that our girls have put in all year long and that they were able to execute a very difficult routine during competition," said head coach Rachel Southall. "Half of our team was experiencing Nationals for the first time, but you couldn't tell because they had worked so hard to become a cohesive team all season long.
"I'm so proud that we were able to not only make it to finals, but beat our scores from last year. This was the perfect way to end a perfect season."
UMKC won the Division I Jazz competition.
The AU Cheer Team also advanced out of preliminaries and placed seventh in the Intermediate All-Girl Division I competition. It was the first time the Eagles Cheer Team moved to finals based on their preliminary-round score.
"This year we had the smallest team in my four years of coaching, 16 total, but I knew this would be a special group," said head coach Ryan Tillery. "We competed this year with 14 girls, five vets and eight rookies. They worked extremely hard all season, from cheering on our basketball teams, to late-night practices and topping it off with 6 a.m. practices.
"They showed more heart, determination and drive than I have ever seen. This group of young women defied everything that you would expect out of a young team… To say they have set a bar for where American University Cheerleading is going is an understatement. Words can't describe how proud I am of all of their hard work this season."
Stephen F. Austin won the division.
