Men’s Basketball Hosts Zero Waste Game on Wednesday

Fans in attendance at Bender Arena this Wednesday night will learn that hitting the right basket at the right time is as important in basketball as it is in recycling and knowing where and how to dispose of your trash properly.

American University's basketball game against Boston University on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. will be a night of excitement bringing the campus community together to both root for the Eagles and learn about sustainable lifestyles and AU's commitment to become a zero-waste and carbon-neutral campus by 2020.

In partnership with AU's Office of Facilities Management and Office of Sustainability, along with the support of Official Game Sponsor Waste Connections, Inc, and fellow corporate partners Big Stuff Inc, & RSI, Coca-Cola, ErgoCan and Aramark Housekeeping, "The game will be both an educational and fun night, as we do our part to spread the word about zero waste on our campus" said Robert Sherman, Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing.

"The Office of Sustainability is thrilled to continue to partner with the Department of Athletics and with Facilities Management for the Zero Waste Basketball Game," said Megan Litke, Director of Sustainability Programs. "Kicking-off RecycleMania on this exciting venue is a great way to start the eight-week intercollegiate recycling competition. We thank the AU community for participating in RecycleMania by putting trash, compost, and recycling in the correct bins on campus."

AU's Assistant Director of Facilities Operations, Mark Feist, adds "The Zero Waste basketball game theme allows Facilities Management an opportunity to share insight with the AU community on American University's day-to-day commitment to our environment".

All fans are invited to learn more about sustainability on campus and to stop by the zero waste sustainability fair next to Section 112 on the main floor of Bender Arena. The fair will feature environmental student groups, such as the AU Student Zero Waste Club and Ecosense.

The first 250 students to arrive at the game will receive a free can of Coca-Cola, which can be recycled after being enjoyed, as well as receive a 'Give it Back" themed coozi can holder from Coca-Cola.

Additionally, all students in attendance will be entered into a raffle to win a Coca-Cola-themed cornhole set.  The winner will be announced in the second half and must be present to win.

Admission to the game is free for AU undergraduate, graduate, and WCL students with valid AU ID. Tickets for faculty, staff, alumni, and fans are available here, or by calling (202) 885-TIXX.
