Impressive Trio Inducted Into Cassell Hall of Fame

WASHINGTON – Three alumni who were cornerstones on their American University teams in the early 2000s were inducted into the Stafford H. “Pop” Cassell Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Saturday night.

Volleyball honoree Karla Kucerkova, track standout Sean O’Brien and field hockey star Javiera Villagra were inducted as the 47th class for the Hall of Fame. Together, they accounted for nine All-America awards during their time at American.

AU President Dr. Neil Kerwin and Board of Trustees Chairman Jack Cassell, the son of “Pop” Cassell, were part of the tribute.

Kucerkova was a two-time Academic All-America Player of the Year as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She was presented Saturday night by her head coach Barry Goldberg.

Head coach Matt Centrowitz and teammate Andy Ellerhorst introduced O’Brien, who was the first student-athlete at AU to earn four All-America honors in track.

Villagra, who is the only Patriot League field hockey player ever to earn first team All-America honors twice, was presented by her head coach, Steve Jennings.
