WASHINGTON - On Saturday, the American University Volleyball community celebrated an impactful victory in front of some very important professors. In a dominating performance, the Eagles earned a 3-1 victory over the Colgate Raiders. Behind the performances of Loren McKenzie and Vela McBride, the Eagles remain undefeated in Patriot League play as they continue their 2018 campaign.

Among those in the stands cheering at Bender Arena were AU professors invited by the student-athletes. In partnership with AU Athletics, the Student Athlete Support Program (SASP) was happy to renew last year’s VIP (Very Important Professor) program that honors outstanding educators on campus.

Enjoying the VIP treatment on Satuday, College of Arts and Sciences Professor Christine Layton watched the match alongside her husband.

“Given that I’d been teaching the class for barely a month, I was astonished that any student would name me as a VIP. Being named a VIP was a nice way to acknowledge my contributions to [a] student’s college experience. The opportunity to meet the other VIPs offered a great opportunity to meet other faculty and feel more connected to the AU community as a whole.”

In addition, Dr. Chris Tudge made it to the game to watch the Eagles earn their eleventh victory of the year.

“It is an honor for me to be recognized by an athlete in my class. I have previously been a VIP for the women's basketball team and thoroughly enjoyed my time court-side then. It is indicative, in a small way, that you are doing a good enough job in the classroom to inspire someone to want to see you outside of the classroom.”

SASP will continue to sponsor VIP games throughout the semester.  The next VIP day will be at the AU Swimming and Diving meet on Friday, October 12 at 6 p.m. and AU Volleyball's next home game is set for October 12 at 7:00 p.m. against Army West Point.
