WASHINGTON - In front of a few very important professors, the American University Field Hockey team put together a dominating 9-1 victory against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. The Eagles managed to put together an incredible 6-1 run in the second half as they were cheered on by the American University community.
Among those in the stands cheering at Jacobs Complex were AU professors invited by the student-athletes. In partnership with AU Athletics, the Student-Athlete Support Program (SASP) was happy to renew last year’s VIP (Very Important Professor) program that honors outstanding educators on campus.
Some of the professors invited by the AU Field Hockey team made the VIP event into a memorable experience. College of Arts & Sciences Professor Nancy Kidder was invited to the game by Freshman Midfielder Maura Phelan.
“I was happy to learn that a student wanted to share her life with me. Our students spend so much of their time in our arena, the classroom. It’s nice to turn that around and enter their lives and understand them in a new way. Knowing that Maura arrives at practice at 7:00am for a 11:00am game shows me how much she has going on outside of my course! I am impressed.”
“I was so impressed at [how] good the AU field hockey team is! Can't wait to see another game!”
SASP will continue to sponsor VIP games throughout the semester. The VIP Volleyball match will be held on Saturday, October 6 at 4 p.m. in Bender Arena. Follow the Field Hockey team all season long by clicking here. The team’s next home game is set for October 12 at 3:00 p.m. against Towson.
